What does it mean that I'm a New Creature?

In the book of 2 Corinthians, the bible says: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5; 17). This text of scripture has been a blessing to countless believers all over around the world. It is a passage which reveals our true identity, it reveals who we truly are in Christ and how God sees us. My heart is always filled with great joy whenever I ponder over second Corinthians chapter five verse seventeen, because it reminds me of what Jesus Christ has already made me, ''a new creation". I am super excited and I thank God for giving me this awesome privilege, for me to expound the meaning of what Paul meant by, "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature" for your spiritual edification.

You are a new creature

The bible makes it clear that to be in Christ is what makes you a new creature, which presupposes that to be outside of Christ is to be a sinful creature. The day you trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation, instantly without delay, you became a new creation. Before you were a sinner, but now God has recreated you anew, you now have a new life  in Christ. As a new creature, you have the Holy Spirit in you, your sins are forgiven, you are the righteousness of God in Christ, you are in an eternal and unbroken union with God. You became a new creation and hence a child of God, not by the will of men, but by the will of God: Who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1; 13). It is God who made you a brand new person, a new creature for his glory. But can you lose your status as a new creation? God forbid, your status as a new creation in Christ is secured eternally. You cannot be created anew by the energy of the Spirit more than once. Once you are in Christ, you are a new creation, there cannot be a time that you will cease to be a new creation. You are forever a new creature by virtue of your union with God through Jesus Christ.

Old things have passed away

Once you are in Christ, old things have passed away. Your past way of life is dead and gone for good. God no longer deals with you based on your past. The way you sought justification and salvation by the works of the law have passed away. The way you loved sin and justified yourself in it have also passed away. Remember, the way you lived to satisfy your sinful nature have all passed away. Your slate was wiped clean the moment you called on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. Therefore, I beseech you by the mercies of God to forget the past, and to press on towards the high calling of God in Christ, just like apostle Paul who wrote: Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14). Certain brethren, instead of striving towards perfection, they rather allow certain sin(s) they committed in time past to serve as an encumbrance to their Christian journey to their own disadvantage. Living in guilt over past sin is useless, why? Because you are a new creature, old things which also includes that sin or sins have passed away. You are saved by grace to show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into light and not to live otherwise. Once you are in Christ, your past is out of the equation, they have passed away, so begin to see yourself exactly the way God sees you in Christ. Will a new creation still sin?

The fact that God's word describes you as a new creation does not mean you cannot sin. There are still remnants of corruption abiding in your flesh, which means that you will sin, for as long as you are still living in this earthly tabernacle. But the good news is that as a new creature you are dead to sin and not dead in sin. You will sin, but the power of sin over your life is now broken. You can now as a new creature choose good over evil. As you grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, your desire for sin will begin to diminish more and more, and your desire to live for Jesus will rather increase more and abound.

We will not cease to sin in this side heaven, we will sin, but sin itself has been dethroned, for it no longer rules over lives. Every born again Christian hates sin and desires to be delivered from it's presence, but we will struggle with sin till our departure from this sinful world to be with the Lord in heaven forever. The good part is that even when we sin, we have an advocate with the father, the Man Jesus Christ: My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world (1 John 2: 1-2). By this do I encourage ungodly lifestyle? May it never be

How to be a new creature

This article is written for believers in Christ, but peradventure if you are not yet a new creature and you desire to be one, then read through this portion carefully, and I pray that you will come to the saving knowledge in Christ Jesus. To be a new creature and to partake of the spiritual blessings in Christ, then it necessitates that you become a new creation. To be a new creation, you need to be in Christ and to be in Christ is to be in an eternal relationship with him. The only way to be in an eternal relationship with Christ and hence be reckoned as a new creation is to put your faith in the death and bodily resurrection of Christ. You need to acknowledge that you are sinner in need of salvation, and to accept Jesus into your heart as your Lord and Savior, and you will be saved: That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation (Romans 10: 9-10). When you put your faith in Christ alone for salvation, you can rest assure that you are now a new creature, old things have passed away, behold, all things have become new. God bless you
